Every one of us has a system that is unique to OUR SELF! I say this as even though we may try to copy another great system, we all will put our own personal touch to what we do. Some of this is because we think we know more than the creator of a system and the other reasons for this is that many times we misunderstood what we had been taught. Therefore and because we will eventually develop a personally unique system, this particular discussion will only give a brief description of the many facets of what will become a final system.

In this article, I will give you the magic formula for success! This is being done because of the following comment from one of my readers and his same thoughts have been told to me by many. He states:

The respiratory system of a bird functions, to a point, similar to ours. The basic function is that inhaled air goes down the windpipe into a pair of lungs. But, beyond the basic function, there are major differences, which a successful fancier needs to learn in order to diagnose abnormal panting in his racing pigeons.

Some graders will grade your birds and possibly give you a score. Some will tell you that this bird can fly the distance and this bird will not. Ask some what they are looking for and they will dance around the subject matter just like a true politician. Let’s cover each of these three items.

Because racing pigeons do not possess sweat glands, control of their bodies’ heat and hydration is regulated through their air sacs. Cooling occurs during respiration as moisture is evaporated from the lining of the air sacs. As the pigeon uses its moisture, or fluid, to cool itself, the loss of fluid can lead to dehydration. In this article, we’ll discuss the effects of race day heat and humidity and how to keep your racer hydrated.

Bacteria, worms, parasites, fungus. These are all causes of racing pigeon diseases. Disease can affect every racing pigeon and can rapidly spread through your loft.  A successful fancier needs to know the causes, signs and symptoms of the common diseases. In this article, we will discuss the most common diseases known to racing pigeons and the steps for prevention.  Armed with this knowledge, the fancier can implement steps to control, if not prevent, many of the racing pigeon diseases.

Situations in Which to Medicate

For fanciers who raise pigeons simply for their own personal enjoyment, who do not compete in races and who rarely bring in new blood, the need to medicate is very rare.

Vitamins are chemical compounds that are natural components of food. Found in minute quantities, feeding vitamins to the pigeon are essential for normal metabolism and health. The vitamins necessary for the performing pigeon are divided into six groups (A, B, C, D, E and K).

Within these six main groups are several different sub-types. 

 
This month, I want to map out for you a nutrition and medication regimen that has worked very dependably for us, and that I believe will make a real difference in the success of your breeding season.

By January, most fanciers have either paired their birds and are raising the first round of youngsters, or they’re still in the process of preparing the breeders for pairing in the weeks to come.

Most fanciers in December are either pairing their birds, or they’re purchasing new stock by attending auctions and sales around the country. So I’d like to talk a bit about purchasing pigeons. There are a number of ways to buy birds, but I think that two particular approaches can bring you the most success.
The least expensive way is to buy in volume, buying a large number of late-hatch babies. Some people even arrange to purchase eggs from a breeder. Late-hatch babies can also be a good way to go. When I’m interested in buying birds from a breeder, I examine the race records and futurity records of their birds to determine the answer to these questions:

In this days the championships of KBDB Antwerp have been published. We were crowned as 1st General Champion (over all) KBDB Antwerp! It is a real honour to be crowned as “best” loft of the province Antwerp. Antwerp is being considered as one of the strongest (pigeon) regions in the world! Don’t forget that in Antwerp almost 7,000 fanciers are living!
 

 
The following medical formulary was compiled and is recommended for use by the Association of Avian Veterinarians.

General Considerations

Purpose: The purpose of this formulary is to provide a concise, accurate description and proper dosage of the common drugs used in pigeons. Experience has shown that various sources provided vastly different dosage levels. Some of which were so high that they were toxic, others so low that they weren’t effective. The dosages and other information in this publication were gathered from multiple knowledgeable sources and are the proper dosages and information to the best off our knowledge. It must be noted, however, that some of this information is based on experience of individuals, not carefully controlled scientific studies. This is especially true for the drugs listed that are not specifically made for or approved for use in pigeons.

Do we find here the fastest pigeons of Belgium????

Three races took place last weekend: Tulle (657km), Dourdan (366km) and Noyon (208km). The birds for Tulle and Dourdan were released on Saturday. Those for Noyon on Sunday.

The youngsters that flew the national race from Bourges (479km) last week, were now entered for Noyon (208km). You would expect that the result was going to be rather moderate. Why? This race is more than 250km shorter than Bourges and the birds need to stay only one day in the basket instead of two. Our youngsters flew however amazingly!

                     SUPER WEEKEND 

In this news flash we will present the first birds from Blois (462km) of last weekend.

We entered 8 yearlings and 39 young birds. No old birds were entered.

The result was excellent. On the interprovincial level we won following results:

Against 2,462 youngsters we won: 1, 2, 30, 36, 37, 38,...
Against 1,519 yearlings we won: 1, 16,...

We have the 1° and 2° fastest bird against 4,969 birds!

This weekend two races were flown: Dourdan (366km) and Argenton (555km). The weather circumstances were really hard. Very hot weather – about 30°C - and wind on the head (east wind).

Dourdan (366 km): 1.,2.,6.,8.,9.,11.,12.,21.,.....against 1.617 birds !

Argenton (555 km): the 21 first nominated birds win a prize !
